JESUS CHRIST - THE SON OF GODby Thomas B. Warren ( reprinted with permission from: Spirtual Sword, 1970, Vol 1(3):inside front cover ) In this issue we propose to set out evidence which justifies the conclusion that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Thus we plan: (1) to set out the basic argument in the form of a three-line syllogism, (2) to show that the argument is valid (i.e., that the premises, if true, necessitate the truthfulness of the conclusion) and (3) to set out proof of the two premises. The Basic Argument Our basic argument is here presented in the form of a syllogism: If the particular characteristics of the person and work of Jesus Christ are such as to be beyond those of mere men, then Jesus is the Son of God. The particular characteristics of the person and work of Jesus Christ are such as to be beyond those of mere men. Therefore, Jesus Christ is the Son of God. This hypothetical syllogism, since the antecedent of the major premise
is affirmed, is unquestionably valid. Thus, if the premises are true,
then the conclusion must be true. Are the Premises True?Quite evidently, it is the case that the major premiseis true, for if the characteristics are supernatural then He is the Son of God. This will be argued more thoroughly in the various articles in this issue. The succeeding articles which appear in this issue constitute proof that the minor premise is also true. Since the argument is valid, and since the premises are true, then the conclusion must be true: Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Upon belief in, love for, and obedience to Him does the destiny of every accountable soul depend. May the heart of every reader be receptive to this truth may this truth result in a changed heart and life in every person in whom such has not already occurred (John 3:1-5; 2 Corinthians 5:17-29). The Spritual Sword is published
quarterly by the Getwell Church of Christ. |
